Allen “Big Al” Frye
Allen R. Frye‚ 31‚ volunteer captain‚ Roslyn Rescue Hook & Ladder Company‚ No. 1‚ died March 25‚ 2002‚ when a vehicle struck him as he participated in a training drill. He served with the department for seven years and enjoyed taking younger firemen under his wing. Frye was chosen 1998 Firefighter of the Year for the Fifth Battalion for saving a woman from her burning home. Very involved in community relations‚ he organized the department’s annual open house and its children’s Christmas party and coordinated fire prevention classes at area elementary schools. He worked as a plumber and enjoyed playing football‚ basketball‚ and softball. He was known in the department as a leader‚ a teacher‚ and a true gentleman.
Peter Langone
Peter Langone‚ 41‚ firefighter‚ FDNY‚ Engine 252. Langone‚ a 14-year FDNY veteran‚ was a New York City police officer before joining the Fire Department. Langone’s father‚ Paul‚ was a volunteer firefighter in Roslyn‚ N.Y.‚ for many years. Langone was a volunteer with the same department as was his brother‚ Tommy‚ a police officer with New York City’s Emergency Service Unit‚ who also perished in the World Trade Center attack. Langone enjoyed swimming with his two daughters.
Police Officer Thomas Langone was killed in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks while attempting to rescue the victims trapped in the World Trade Center. Officer Langone had been a member of the New York City Police Department for 18 years, and is survived by his wife, son, and daughter. His brother, Peter, a Roslyn Rescue member and a New York City Fire Fighter, was also killed in the attack. Officer Langone was posthumously awarded the New York City Police Department's Medal of Honor for his heroic actions. He was assigned to ESU Truck 10.
